The Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer will join Calpsan Systems in Newport News, VA.  Calspan Systems provides expertise in wind tunnel test equipment and services and provides research & development support to propulsion, marine & aerospace companies.  We are looking for a motivated Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer to join our team and continue our rich tradition of providing quick turn service for prototype systems and components.

Description for Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer:
  • Create conceptual designs of mechanical and electromechanical systems meet customer requirements, i.e. wind tunnel models, and conduct necessary activities to confirm and validate design
  • As needed, perform as project leader on sub projects from larger programs and assume responsibility for small to medium tasks
  • Provide support during the internal build phase and at customer’s facility, as required
  • Provide technical guidance to personnel involved in developing and executing the design approaches
  • Interface with the customer to ensure design requirements are met
  • Complete assigned tasks within schedule and budget 
Preferred Education / Experience for Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer:
  • BSME, BSAE, or advanced engineering degree
  • 7+ years of working knowledge of mechanical design techniques, drafting standards, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to above 
Preferred Knowledge / Ability of Wind Tunnel Model Design Engineer: 
  • Must have experience designing wind tunnel models
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work on multiple projects, and prioritize workload
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • May be required to travel up to 10% of the time
  • Previous exposure to machining and fabrication processes, interaction with shop personnel, and familiarity with manufacturing techniques are required
  • Must be PC literate and a working knowledge of CAD systems (Unigraphics preferred)
